When the card is completed, users have the option to donate money to the BHF and they can also order a Real Valentine Campaign fundraising pack. The personalised card is then sent by e-mail and the recipient hears the message read out by a sound-alike celebrity of their admirer’s choice, such as Robbie Williams, Barbara Windsor or Eminem. They too then have the option to send their own love poem and donate to the charity. The original idea came from from the BHF’s own Web team. The BHF’s online manager Bertrand Bosredon said: “The British Heart Foundation is producing an alternative card-making kit for Valentine’s Day and we wanted to complement that with an online version.“Normal e-cards are a bit old hat now and people are looking for something a bit more original at this time of year, so we decided to make it interactive, multi-media and fun. I’ve already sent one to my mum and she loved it!”The poem generator was designed for the BHF using Flash software and impersonators were used for the celebrity sound-alikes.The online card is amusing and offers a wide choice of words which can be inserted into your personalised message. However, it does require you to come up with your own message, so might put some people off. Some ready-made examples might have helped boost the number of people using the service. Also, the “donate” button that appeared on the page which asked you to send the e-card felt misplaced. One is not likely to have gone through the effort of making the card and then head off to make a donation. The point at which to make a donation is straight after the card has been sent. BHF do of course include a prominent message at this stage, although interestingly they use a “click here” graphical button, rather than “donate”. The British Heart Foundation is encouraging lovers to send one of their “interactive e-cards” this Valentine’s Day and raise funds for the charity. The e-cards, on receipt, are ‘read out’ by a sound-alike celebrity of their admirer’s choice. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is this year offering an amusing online element to its Real Valentine Campaign to “mend real broken hearts.” The charity believes it’s taking the standard charity e-card a stage further.BHF is encouraging romantics to visit its Real Valentine Campaign microsite and craft their own poetic ditty to their loved one. They can choose from a wide range of words to follow the traditional lines, “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue”, with their own touching, soppy or funny verse. Trenton Oldfield, the protester who disrupted the Oxford and Cambridge Boat race last year, has dropped his appeal to reduce his six month prison sentence. The 36-year-old, who is from Australia but currently living in East London, sabotaged the race in April by swimming into the paths of rowers, causing it to be halted and restarted. The race, which was watched by millions on television, was won by Cambridge after being restarted. In October, Oldfield was sentenced to six months imprisonment for causing a public nuisance, and ordered to pay £750 in costs. Judge Anne Molyneux said that he had acted dangerously, disproportionately, displayed prejudice and showed no regret for his actions, and that he had ruined the race for everyone. Although he was due to challenge his sentence in court this week, a Judicial Office spokeswoman has since confirmed that Oldfield has withdrawn his application.Oldfield said he was protesting against elitism and government cuts, and saw the race as symbolic of issues around class. His supporters compare him to the Pussy Riot demonstrators in Russia and say that he has been treated unfairly. On the day of his court hearing his wife said that his protest was ‘a reaction to an increasingly brutal business, media and political elite.’Although four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Matthew Pinsent said that Oldfield could have been seriously injured, Oldfield suggested that as an Australian, he was used to dodging surfboards, rocks and boats, and so was not at risk.Oldfield claims that government ministers lobbied the Metropolitan Police Commissioner to ensure that the original charge was altered to increase the likelihood that he would be sent to prison.Alastair Billing, a student at Oxford Brookes, said Oldfield shouldn’t have to go to jail ‘I mean what he did was moronic but it wasn’t exactly illegal.’Ryan Flanagan, a third year Balliol student commented, ‘Appealing in the first place shows how arrogant he is, dropping the appeal makes him even more arrogant.’

(Tampa, FL) — One of the women featured in a popular Netflix series, Carole Baskin of Tampa, feels betrayed by the show’s producers.Carole Baskin and her third husband, Howard, run Big Cat Rescue in Hillsborough County, Florida which cares for wild animals that have been abused. She’s also one of the main personalities in Tiger King, but she says she was misled as to what the series would be about. She says she was led to believe the show would be about the dangers tigers face from wildlife traders, like the show’s star, Joe Exotic.Instead, she says the series has missed the point, and it has ignored the abuse tiger cubs face. Also, the show shifted attention to the 1997 disappearance of her second husband Don Lewis. Many people believe that he was murdered, and that Carole was allegedly involved. South Africa has 50 TVET colleges, but according to Unesco, increasing the appeal of TVET has been noted as a significant policy challenge both nationally and globally. (Image: MediaClubSouthAfrica) The minister of higher education and training foresees progressive skills reforms with a new approach to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges in South Africa.Minister Blade Nzimande was speaking at the TVET Conference, held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand on 18 and 19 November. The theme of the conference was: “Together forging a vibrant Technical and Vocational Education and Training system in South Africa”.Education is a non-negotiable in South Africa. The Constitution states: “Everyone has a right to a basic education, including adult basic education, and to further education, which the state, through reasonable measures, must make progressively available and accessible.”South Africa has 50 TVET colleges, but according to Unesco, increasing the appeal of TVET has been noted as a significant policy challenge both nationally and globally. Internationally, there are policy documents suggesting that TVET continues to struggle for parity of esteem with other forms of education.“Aligning our colleges and their programmes to the world of work is no longer negotiable. This means colleges and employers must collaborate for the prospering of individual citizens as well as the economy,” Nzimande said.Technical and vocational education and training is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the world of work. Historically, there have been a number of terms used to describe elements of the field that are now conceived as comprising TVET. These include: apprenticeship training, vocational education, technical education, technical-vocational education, and occupational education.Nzimande emphasised the importance of TVET in skills development for economic progress. “The new approach to colleges is much more than a name change for former FET (further education and training) colleges. It signals the beginning of a whole new era for colleges in the development of the country’s post‐school education and training system.“The name change aligns us well with international practice. It also signals the integrating of formal education with practical training and aligning these to the requirements of occupations.”BUILDING PARTNERSHIPSCollaboration between business and industry, as well as education and training sectors, was vital for the success of TVET, he said, calling on TVET colleges to build strong links with business and industry. “The critical change the Higher Education Ministry seeks is that link to business and industry. I want colleges to be viewed by employers as delivering quality programmes that meet their needs.”According to Unesco, qualified and motivated teachers and instructors are key for effective learning and are at the heart of TVET quality. Effective policies and frameworks aimed at professionalising TVET staff and improving their development, living and working conditions are considered essential measures.INCREASED FUNDINGIn South Africa, the Department of Higher Education and Training seeks to stabilise systems, move the sector from a provincial to a national competence, drive articulation, expand access and make provision for poor students the basis of the turnaround of this sector. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has increased provision for the sector from R318-million in 2009 to R2-billion in 2014. Access has increased from 340 000 students in 2009 to over 800 000 students in 2014.Yet Unesco points out that South Africa faces a number of challenges in implementing an effective TVET system. These include the lack of quantity, diversity and quality of TVET colleges. The UN agency adds that the government has addressed the problem of quantity by establishing 12 new colleges in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga with the first students enrolling this year. The diversification of colleges, however, is lagging because of capacity constraints and the lack of coherence and co-operation between educational institutions and the labour market, Unesco adds.Given this, the co-operation Nzimande is calling for is expected to tackle some challenges in the TVET sector.
