Police and soldiers to monitor airspace Police and soldiers in the interior would be asked to be on the lookout for shuttle flights during the period of suspension. He warned that anyone found violating the temporary ban risked having the airline’s Air Operators Certificate revoked or the pilot suspended. The announcement followed a meeting earlier Wednesday with the private aircraft operators. He added that the procedures would require the airlines to state, among other things, refueling procedures qualified loaders, certified engineers, and dispatchers. He suggested that the authority has received unofficial information that each 45-gallon fuel drum is in some instances overloaded by five gallons, resulting in overweight of the planes.Field said the decision was made in the aftermath of the three recent air crashes involving shuttle flights in the mountainous interior. Two of those incidents resulted in the deaths of Pilots Collin Martin and Imran Khan. Flights suspended with “immediate effect” – Civil Aviation AuthorityThe Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) says shuttle flights between interior locations have been suspended with immediate effect until domestic airlines submit policies and procedures on such operations for approval.“As a result of the accidents and the authority’s preliminary analysis, the authority has now taken the decision to suspend all operations until the documented procedures and policies for shuttle operations are submitted, reviewed and approved by the inspectors of this authority,” GCAA Director General, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Egbert Field said.No specific time frame was given for the ban to be lifted, but he expected the domestic airlines to submit manuals and other documents to the authority very shortly.Field said the GCAA would match them against International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) documents and regulations following which inspectors would conduct physical checks at the locations. “When we approve those documents, indirectly we are saying to the operator ‘this is how we expect you to operate’ so that document is like a contract between the operator and the Civil Aviation Authority,” he said.
The small opposition party, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), in Antigua has questioned the “haste” in which Prime Minister Gaston Browne revoked the appointment of Investment and Tourism Minister Asot Michael, following Asot’s arrest in Britain on Monday.Blow to country’s reputationWhile stating that the detention of Michael by police at the Gatwick International Airport is “another blow” to the reputation of Antigua and Barbuda, the DNA said, “It is a well-established principle that every accused is innocent until proven guilty, it is curious as to why the PM acted with “rapid fire’.”Release from custodyMichael, who was released from police custody on Monday, said in a statement, it was “unfortunate” Browne did not contact him before relieving him of his portfolio.“I fully accept and respect the Prime Minister’s right to appoint and remove Ministers in his Government. However, in the circumstances I consider that the Prime Minister’s decision in this case, to relieve me of my ministerial responsibilities, is likely to be due to a misapprehension of what has taken place, and second- hand information, indeed misinformation.“I do not consider that any justifiable question has arisen that I have failed to comply with the highest possible standards required of public office.” Michel added. No firm detailsPrime Minister Browne, who acknowledged that he had “no firm details of the reasons for Asot Michael’s arrest,” nonetheless said that he had advised Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams to revoke immediately Michael appointment “pending the outcome of his arrest Monday morning by the Metropolitan Police in London.“…The arrest itself is sufficient for me to revoke immediately his appointment as a Cabinet member and to relieve him of all Ministerial portfolios until this matter is resolved,” Browne said, adding “I have repeatedly stated that I expect every member of my government to comply with the highest possible standards required of public office, and while Mr. Michael might establish his innocence in time, the fact that he has been arrested, obliges me to relieve him of all government duties,” he added.Asot Michael said he will speak with the Prime Minister as soon as possible to explain the situation.
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Chinese Embassy in Kingston has described a statement made by United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, concerning the Asian nation’s investment in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean as irresponsible.Pompeo made the comment on Wednesday, while addressing a policy discussion before ending his visit to Jamaica.Late Wednesday, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica, in a message telegraphed to Washington D.C., likened the Donald Trump administration to that of a “trouble-seeking cowboy picking fights with trading partners”.“For some time, it seems that some US politicians cannot go anywhere without attacking China, tarnishing China’s reputation, starting fires and fanning the flames and sowing discord,” the message read.“They can go on talking the talk if they so wish, but we will continue walking the walk. The world will tell plainly who is stirring up trouble and who is trying to make a difference.”The embassy said that China has brokered cooperation pacts with Latin America and the Caribbean on the basis of respect, equality, and mutual benefit, and that China’s billion-dollar infrastructure and other investments had been welcomed by the region.“Latin America and the Caribbean countries, as independent sovereign countries, have the right to determine their own foreign relations, including choosing their trade and investment partners. Others are in no position to impose interference or coercion out of ulterior motives,” the statement noted.Pompeo, has urged regional countries to thoroughly examine investments from all countries, and pointed to the Chinese in his response to a question raised during the policy discussion.According to Pompeo, the Chinese Communist Party presents a grave threat to democratic values, adding that Jamaica and its regional neighbours should “just make sure the transactions are on the up and up and that the investment is made for economic purposes”.“We love the Chinese people. The US has enormous investments from China in our country and we have American companies that have invested in China, too,” Pompeo said. (CMC)

What started out as a one game per year ‘International Series’ though quickly began to grow, seeing more games and venues being added. This year London will stage four match ups, with two at Wembley being completed over the last two weekends and a further two to come at Twickenham later this month. 2018 will see a minimum of five games staged, as Tottenham Hotspur’s new home enters the mix. A franchise in the English capital remains the pipe-dream, but with an influx of games comes wave after wave of new fans and a surge in NFL’s popularity in the betting market.SBC caught up with Liam Durkin, the Head of NFL for Sky Bet, to discuss the betting popularity of American Football in the United Kingdom, and how more people can be persuaded to place a wager.___________With an increasing number of games being staged in London each year, what is the popularity of NFL in the UK? And how does it relate to the betting market?LD: I think the NFL within the UK is hugely popular, I’ve seen the growth on my social media feeds with people slowly tuning into this great game year on year. The London games have definitely helped grow the hardcore fans, from being fans taking an outside interest into having a team and following them, but it’s also brought a new raft of fans that never thought about NFL as a good sport to follow to now at least having some sort of interest. In terms of betting markets, London games are always a highlight of the week’s schedule for us. There’s always more interest than the average weekly game, although I’m not sure whether changing the kick off to our afternoon and early morning in the US has helped, or whether it could be even bigger given it often clashes with Sunday afternoon Premier League. What steps can be made, from a betting perspective, to tap into the fan base further still?LD: At the moment the game is still evolving within the UK, people like to know information and stats. I think giving people stats and information on previous meetings between two teams, or attempting to highlight, say, who Julio Jones is and how big of a player he is to new fans/bettors is a key process at the moment.Obviously everyone knows who Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and even some people will know who James Coppinger is – but they won’t necessarily know Julio Jones, Antonio Brown or Samjae Perine is. If this process can be executed correctly.I think if any company can make betting appealing to the masses of Fantasy NFL players, there’s a lot of potential for growth in the industry. How that can be done I’m not entirely sure, the search continues. Also, the NFL can often be a confusing game at times with the various rules and procedures, but allowing customers to bet on what they know and what they understand is a great step forward. Our RequestABet feature on NFL is as popular as ever, allowing people to request a specific bet and then wager on it.Will we ever reach a stage where American football is amongst the more popular betting sports in the UK?LD: I can never, ever see American Football (or any other sport) gazumping football from the top of the UK sports betting tree – or at least not whilst the Premier League remains as strong as it currently is, plus Sky Sports & BT Sport are branching out new channels to show more and more non-Premier League Football too.
