Estate workers continued to protest today demanding a daily wage of Rs. 1000.Protests were staged in many parts of the hill country as a solution has not yet been reached. “The unions are asking for Rs. 1,000 as a basic wage up from the current Rs. 500, which is a two fold increase,” he said. The Minister said that it was impossible to increase the daily wage from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 as the cost of production, the price of tea, productivity, and profitability does not justify the demand.He said that the companies have offered between Rs. 930-940 as an all-inclusive package and he was in talks with the companies to increase it to Rs. 950.
